The Salzburg Marionette Theatre is taking its 111th birthday as an occasion to bring puppet theatre in all its facets to Salzburg and is initiating the PUPPETS! Festival in October. The first edition of the festival is dedicated to the string marionette. From October 24 to 27, five companies from Spain, France, Italy, and Germany will be guests in Salzburg, showcasing the versatility and complexity of marionette theatre. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre's contribution is a new production of Shakespeare’s Romeo und Julia, directed by Thomas Reichert. The premiere will also mark the opening of the festival on October 24.

Given the long tradition of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre and the recognition of its performance practice as intangible UNESCO cultural heritage (Austrian list), the PUPPETS! In the "Atelier Gespräch", Sabine Coelsch-Foisner engages in intriguing discussions with scholars and participants of the festival, exploring fascinating perspectives on the string puppet in the 21st century.
